先日発売された『BikeJIN(2022年10月号)』、『RIDERS CLUB(2022年10月号)』の記事を読んでくれた方はもうご存じと思いますが、いま私は2024年開催の「アフリカ・エコ・レース」（以下AER）参戦を目指して動き始めています。
AERはまだ冒険レースの側面が色濃かった「パリ・ダカ」への回帰を謳い、2009 年から毎年開催されている国際ラリーです。そのルートはモナコをスタートし、モロッコやモーリタニアを駆け抜けてセネガルのダカールの海岸でフィニッシュするという、12日間で、総距離6000㎞以上にも及ぶとても過酷なものです。
完走するには、車両性能やライディングスキルはもちろん、ナビゲーション能力や、車両の修復能力や、チームビルド、１日平均500㎞の道のりを12日間に渡り集中力を保ち続ける精神力や体力、判断力など、数えきれないほどの総合的な能力が試されます。
完走はおろか参戦自体が高い壁であり、ひとりの人間として、ひと回りもふた回りも成長する必要があると思います。それでも……いや、困難であるからこそAERへ参戦することに強い意義を感じています。
サハラ砂漠をバイクで走る――
冒険を愛するオフロードライダーにとって、究極の夢ではないでしょうか。父の影響で風間深志さんや三好礼子さんといった冒険ライダーの存在を知り、強く憧れていた私もその一人です。
もちろんこの夢を叶えることがこのプロジェクトにおける最大の目的ですが、私にはさらにもうひとつ実現したいことがあります。
私は子どもの頃、世界で起こる飢えや貧困に苦しむ人々の現状を知り、とくに次世代を担う子ども達に何ができるだろうかと考え続けてきました。日本という恵まれた国で何不自由なく暮らす現実との埋めようのないギャップに悩んだこともあります-（同じことを考えたことがある人はきっと多いと思います）。
じつはオフロードバイクに乗り始めたのも大学で社会貢献活動について学んだことが大きなきっかけです。東日本大震災の復興支援活動でオフロードバイクが活躍していたことを知り、「自由」と「社会性」を兼ね備えた素晴らしい乗り物だと感銘を受けたのです。
話を戻します。大学時代、国際NGOのユースグループのメンバーとして他の大学の学生たちと途上国について勉強していたときのことです。私はインドの山村に訪れ、現地の子ども達と交流する機会に恵まれました。日本では考えられないほど物資が乏しく、児童労働や厳しい自然環境と対峙しながら暮らす彼らは、私たちをとても温かく迎えてくれました。自分達より遥かに恵まれた境遇にある相手を労わり、屈託のない笑顔を見せる子ども達の姿……
反対に、少し都市部に入り、農村部よりも経済的に豊かな地域に入ると、かえって自らが貧困で不幸せであると話す人が多く見えるようになりました。
このことは不幸や貧困というものを、主に環境や経済的な問題として捉えていた私にはショッキングなものでした。
経済的に恵まれていなくても幸福に暮らす人々がいるという予想外の光景に、私は考え方の転換を迫られることになりした。多くの人が、”貧しい”という地域に、経済的な物質的な支援をして彼は本当に幸せを感じえるのか？
物資をはじめとする経済的な支援は、貧困問題を解決する大きな原動力であり必要不可欠であることに違いないですが、私なりの”支援”は別の形であると感じるようになり、いつしか、心の在りようによって、人々が豊かになることができるなら、私はその精神と経験を通じて得たノウハウを伝え、一緒に経験しながら成長していくことが、私なりの”支援”であると考えるようになりました。
そして今、このAER参戦というプロジェクトを通じて、高い壁を越えてAER参戦を成し遂げたとき、私はひとつ大きな”経験”を得られます。豊かな心を育み、苦境にあっても夢や希望を失わず、自ら道を切り開い強く生きる術を、自らの体験をもとにした言葉で子ども達へ伝えることが、私にできる”支援”であると実感しています。
AERに出場したい旨を話すと多くの人から「無理だ」と言われましたが、中には「無理じゃない。何でもできる！」と背中を強く押してくれる人もいました。これまで幾度となく不可能を可能にしてきた風間深志さんです。大きな勇気をもらえたのと同時に、私もそういう強い言葉を発する、これから何かをチャレンジしたいと思っている人々の背中を押してあげられるような存在になりたいと思いました。
少し長くなりましたが、私はこれから国内ラリーをはじめ、「ラリーモンゴリア」などの海外ラリーを走って経験を積みながらAER参戦を目指すという、険しい道を歩むことになります。その模様をすでにいくつかの媒体で発信する話も進んでいます。ぜひこれからの田中愛生の活動を見守ってください。よろしくお願いします。

Toward Africa Eco Race
As some of you may already know from the articles in the recently released “BikeJIN” (October 2022 issue) and “RIDERS CLUB” (October 2022 issue), I am preparing to participate in the “Africa Eco Race” (hereafter AER) to be held in 2024.
The AER is an international rally that has been held every year since 2009, and claims to be a return of the “Paris-Dakar” rally, which was still more of an adventure race. The route is very demanding, covering a total distance of more than 6,000 km over 12 days, starting in Monaco, driving through Morocco and Mauritania, and finishing on the coast of Dakar, Senegal.
Finishing the race tests not only vehicle performance and riding skills, but also navigation, vehicle repair, team building, mental and physical strength to maintain focus and judgment for 12 days on the road, which averages 500 km per day, and countless other comprehensive abilities.
It is a high hurdle for me to enter the race, let alone finish it, and I need to grow as a person one or two more times. Even so, ……, I feel that because it is so difficult that it is so meaningful to participate in AER.
Riding a motorcycle through the Sahara Desert–
For off-road riders who love adventure, this must be the ultimate dream. I am one of them, having learned about adventure riders such as Shinji KAZAMA and Reiko MIYOSHI through my father and having a strong yearning for them.
Of course, fulfilling this dream is the main goal of this project, but there is one more thing I would like to achieve.
When I was a child, I learned about the current situation of people suffering from hunger and poverty in the world, and I kept thinking about what I could do to help the children, especially those who will lead the next generation. I was sometimes troubled by the gap between the reality of living without any inconvenience in the blessed country of Japan (I am sure that many people have thought the same thing).
In fact, the main reason I started riding off-road motorcycles was because I learned about social contribution activities at university. When I learned that off-road motorcycles were playing an active role in reconstruction assistance activities following the Great East Japan Earthquake, I was impressed by the wonderful combination of “freedom” and “sociality” that they offer.
Back to the story. When I was in college, I was a member of a youth group for an international NGO, studying about developing countries with other college students. I had the opportunity to visit a mountain village in India and interact with local children. They were so warmly welcomed by us, even though they were living in a situation where goods were so scarce that it would be unimaginable in Japan, and they were facing child labor and a harsh natural environment. The children showed us their carefree smiles as they worked hard to help others who are in far better circumstances than they are. ……
Conversely, as I moved a bit further into the city and into more economically affluent areas than rural areas, I began to see more and more people describing themselves as poor and unhappy.
This was shocking to me, as I had always viewed unhappiness and poverty as primarily environmental and economic issues.
The unexpected sight of people living happily even if they are not economically well off forced me to change my way of thinking. Can he really feel happy by providing economic and material support to an area that many people say is “poor”?
However, I have come to feel that my own form of “support” is different. I have come to believe that if people can be enriched by their spirit and the know-how I have gained through my experience, my own form of “support” is to share that spirit and the know-how I have gained through my experience, and to grow together with them.
And now, through this project of participating in AER, I will be able to gain a great “experience” when I overcome the high barriers to participate in AER. I feel that I can provide “support” to children by sharing my own words based on my own experiences, showing them how to nurture a rich heart, never lose hope and dreams even in hardships, and how to make their own way and live strongly.
When I told people that I wanted to compete in AER, many told me that I couldn’t do it, but some said, “No, it’s not impossible. You can do anything!” Some of them even pushed me to do it. This is Shinji KAZAMA, who has made the impossible possible many times in his career. I was given a great deal of courage, and at the same time, I wanted to be the kind of person who can say such strong words and push the backs of those who want to take on challenges in the future.
I know this is a bit long winded, but I am going to take a hard road to compete in AER while gaining experience in domestic rallies as well as overseas rallies such as “Rally Mongolia”. I am already talking about sending out information about this through several media. Please keep an eye on Ai Tanaka’s activities from now on. We look forward to your continued support.
